Organist - FUMC Bellfontaine
FLSA status: non-exempt
Work Schedule: 8 - 10 hours/week

Summary:
Organist works during the hours of the Sunday morning worship services (traditional) and those additional services as arranged with pastor/worship committee. Preparations, such as previewing music to be used, practicing, and maintaining any library of music, are done at time of the keyboardist’s choice.

Qualifications:
• Strong Christian faith
• Training and/or experience in bookkeeping
• Solid verbal and written communication skills
• Trustworthy
• Competent with Pipe organ and piano

Supervisor: Senior Pastor

Areas of Responsibility
• Maintain adequate skills on the piano and organ
• Timely attendance at all worship services and practices
• Selection of hymns for each service unless specified by the pastor
• Complete time sheets to the Treasurer for Traditional musicians.
• Maintain a music library

Essential Job Functions
• Select and prepare three "solo" selections to be appropriately used for the Prelude, Reflection music, and Postlude.
• Provide the list of above selections for the church office by Tuesday morning preceding each Sunday (or as directed by the church secretary).
• Accompany the congregational hymns.
• Accompany "special music" selections when provided by vocalists or instrumentalists on either piano or organ.
• Provide prayer, communion, and/or other service responses that are not sung by the choir.
• Provide a substitute organist at least 2 weeks in advance in the event of absence.

Additional Services throughout the Church Year

Organist may be asked to play at the following:

• Christmas Eve Services (2 services)
• Ash Wednesday
• Maundy Thursday
• Good Friday
• Easter Sunrise

SPECIAL SERVICES AND EVENTS:

The following are services performed at the option of the organist:
A. Church funerals
B. Church weddings
1. Establish a wedding form/document listing keyboard staff names and contact information.
2. Required contact with keyboard staff two (2) months prior to date of wedding.
3. This may require meeting with the couple to plan music for the
ceremony and may involve rehearsals with soloist(s) prior to the wedding rehearsal.

Recitals, lessons with students, etc., are optional and are arranged with the keyboardist.

• None

• Must serve as a positive Christian role model
• Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to collaborate and work effectively with staff and volunteers
• Ability to manage conflict and build peaceful solutions
• Must possess the ability to exercise judgment and discretion with sensitive matters and the application and interpretation of church policies

Certificates, Licenses, Registration:
• Valid driver’s license

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to move freely in and out of different group settings. Specific vision abilities are required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus. Must have excellent command of the English language and grammar, both verbal and written. Normal vision and hearing acuity are required to read and work with data and to use the telephone and/or to interact with other staff and the public.

Hours, Compensation and Benefits

Hours of Employment:
● Flexible
● Hours- 8 Hours of the Week
● Attendance at a weekly staff meeting.

Compensation:
● Salary determined to comply with market competitiveness.
● Compensation paid on the 30th of each month.

Benefits:
● Employees become eligible for one week of vacation after completing one year of employment. Allotted vacation can grow to three weeks annually as defined by Employee Handbook.
● Ten paid holidays – Paid holidays for this position include: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday following Easter, Memorial Day, Juneteenth. July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day,
● Paid sick leave accumulated at the rate of 1 day per month of employment but not to exceed 15 days accumulated per year. Unused sick leave shall not be convertible to pay upon termination or retirement.

The Employee will work both in the office environment as well as public and private venues beyond the church setting.
