Organist/Music Department Administrator
Part Time Position Available: January 2027

Second Presbyterian Church, an historic congregation located in downtown Newark, Ohio, is seeking an Organist/Music Department Administrator to provide musical leadership and administrative support for the church’s vibrant music ministry.

For many decades, Second Presbyterian Church has demonstrated a strong commitment to high-quality worship music, embracing both traditional and contemporary expressions of worship. We are seeking a talented and collaborative musician who can contribute to this tradition while helping the congregation continue to grow its music ministry.

Responsibilities

The Organist/Music Department Administrator will:

  • Provide appropriate organ and piano music for worship services.

  • Lead congregational hymn singing.

  • Accompany the church choirs and other vocal or instrumental ensembles.

  • Collaborate with clergy, staff, musicians, and volunteers in planning worship.

  • Help coordinate the church’s music program and related activities.

  • Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, organizational, and administrative skills.

  • Support special worship services, concerts, and other music-related events.

Second Presbyterian Church offers an outstanding collection of instruments and facilities, including:

  • A three-manual, 36-rank pipe organ with MIDI, rebuilt in 2017 by Bunn-Minnick Co.

  • A Steinway & Sons Model D concert grand piano

  • A Pettit & Fritzen cast-bell carillon

  • Five octaves of Whitechapel handbells

  • Concert percussion equipment

  • A large Orff instrument ensemble

The congregation also maintains music endowments dedicated to special worship music, hosting musical events, and the ongoing care and maintenance of the pipe organ and Steinway piano.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong organ and piano skills appropriate for congregational worship and choral accompaniment.

  • Experience accompanying choirs and leading congregational singing.

  • An appreciation for a range of worship music, from traditional repertoire to contemporary forms.

  • Effective leadership and organizational abilities.

  • A collaborative approach to working with clergy, staff, musicians, and members of the congregation.

Formal musical training and relevant professional experience are highly desirable.

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience.

  • Paid vacation included.
